Honestly, I just have to show you some of my favorite pages. Besides the story told, I really liked the detail of the illustrations in themselves water is not an easy element to illustrate, but I love the texture and realism Miyares conveys. He is full of energy and excitement, especially when contrasted with the grey and wet world. The illustrations are monochromatic, with the boy's yellow rain suit being the sole, bright point on every page. It's a wordless picture book that is so simple in its telling-and yet, it carries some amazing depth and emotion. Daniel believes that our stories have the power to connect us all. He also illustrated Surf's Up, written by Newbery Medalist Kwame Alexander. Some of his books include Float, Night Out, Pardon Me, Night Walk to the Sea, written by Deborah Wiles, and Hope at Sea. But when the rain lets up, he finds himself on a new adventure altogether. Daniel Miyares is a critically acclaimed picture book author and illustrator. Daniel Miyares’ Float is the story of a young boy who makes a paper boat out of a newspaper with his father, and then heads out into the rain-drenched neighborhood to set it sail in the rain-water the boat gets away from him and slips down a water drain, so the boy tracks it to the mouth of the drain, where the boat emerges, worse for wear. The little boy eventually finds the soggy, ruined boat and sadly makes his way home. He dances in the downpour and plays in the puddles, but when he sends his boat floating down a gutter stream, it quickly gets away from him. Themes: rain, play, disappointment & joy, origamiĪ little boy takes a boat made of newspaper out for a rainy-day adventure.

Jennifer shoves Claire back towards the stairs, but Claire manages to grab hold of the banister and shove Jennifer away. Claire, having no other wearable clothes or money to buy more, decided that she had no choice but to retrieve her clothes from the trash. However on her way, she bumps into Monica and her side-kicks, Jennifer and Gina, who begin to torment her. Claire had become Monica's recent bully victim after she had made Monica look stupid in front of her friends, and some hot upperclassmen. And the biggest secret of all isn't really a secret, except from Claire: Morganville is run by vampires, and they are hungry for fresh blood.Ĭlaire had been doing laundry on the top floor of Howard Hall, the least valued and most run-down rooms in the least valued, most run-down dorm, She had returned to find that all of her clothes had been stolen by Monica and the Monickettes, who had left her a note to tell her that they had thrown all of her clothes in the trash. It was bad enough that she got on the wrong side of Monica, the meanest of the school's mean girls, but now she's got three new roommates who all have secrets of their own. In Morganville, there is an evil that lurks in the darkest shadows - one that will spill out into the bright light of day.įor Claire Danvers, high school was hell, but college may be murder. Morganville is a small town filled with unusual characters - when the sun goes down, the bad come out. It's easy to understand why Thompson, during the last decades of her life, refused to let ELOISE IN MOSCOW remain in print. Grown-ups who wish to recall the Cold War years will enjoy this book most. Parents unfamiliar with Russian pronunciation are likely to further slow down the narrative as they stumble over foreign phrases. With the guide constraining them, Eloise finds very little mischief to get into, but there is travelogue - lots and lots of boring tour guide-speak. Most of the time, however, it's snowing hard and she's stuck seeing only the sights allowed by her government guide. First published in 1951-when cold war sentiments were heating up-Eloise in Moscow showcases the highly undiplomatic exploits of our favorite precocious 6-year-old as she paints the town red with her beloved Nanny. It's also fun seeing Eloise dress up in disguise to explore the hotel at night. Eloise gets more outlandish with each book in Kay Thompson and Hilary Knight's popular 1950s series. The only fun Eloise has - and about the only page to get a giggle out of an 8-year-old - is when Weenie the dog senses an intruder and they all frighten themselves. First printing, in which Eloise tours Moscow, visiting famous monuments and eating Russian food. In Eloise's Moscow (a decade after World War II), everyone waits in line for everything, everyone is spied on, and the rich enjoy indulgences not available to the many. Kay Thompson has made Eloise an international spy rather than a troublemaker, and it's a change that disappoints, especially because the Soviet Union Eloise saw no longer exists. Eloise, who is so often up to mischief, this time reports on all the mischief in Moscow. Anita accidentally becomes Nathaniel’s owner. Anita uses this ability to heal Nathaniel, a were-leopard who is mentally/emotionally in the terms of S&M a 'pet' which is a level below a 'slave' in where a pet cannot function or look after themselves without an owner or master.Anita takes in the 'munin', not a ghost but mixture of energy and memories of Raina, the previous lupa who was a masochist but it also allows Anita to manipulate flesh to heal or harm but the memory of Raina usually likes to force Anita to do something she wouldn't otherwise be comfortable doing.Anita becomes the Alpha or 'Nimir-Ra' of the local pard (Queen of the local group of were-leopards).There is not a dull moment in this book, so I might actually dot point this. In the Discworld universe, however, that means we meet Lu-Tze the History Monk, one of Pratchett’s finest creations. I’m not too fond of time travel shenanigans. But he wasn’t that fond of that future before he accidentally left it, so this is where (or when) he has to make a choice. But then a magical accident happens and he is flung back in time to the days of his first job as a watchman, and he’s forced to tackle the streets if he wants to save the future that he just came from. He’s a watchman with street smarts, but he’s never on the streets anymore and this worries him. I could never really pin down Vimes as a character (but neither could Ankh-Morpork’s Assassination Guild), but in this story he shows what a good down-to-earth guy he is. The series quietly morphed into a vehicle for character development of Sam Vimes, and the sixth book focuses a lot on Vimes and his identity crisis. Vimes match up with Lady Sybil and was given a royal title by the Patrician. First, we saw the Watch recruit new officers from other species, like Angua the first werewolf and Detritus the first Troll. Night Watch is the sixth novel in the City Watch subseries, and a lot of development has preceded it. With Night Watch, I think it is no longer possible to say that you can just start anywhere in the Discworld series and jump right in. |
